You are likely familiar with the organization of Canadian law. In order to better understand the law we have classified, or organized it, according to purpose and area of focus. These various areas of law connect to our daily lives and govern many of our activities and interactions. Take a moment to determine the definition of each area of law and then take the quiz to check your understanding. Long Description. On the surface, the law appears straightforward. Law is a set of rules that governs the behaviour of citizens.

Grade 12 Law examines elements of Canadian and international law in social, political, and global contexts. Students will study the historical and philosophical sources of law and the principles and practices of international law and will learn to relate them to issues in Canadian society and the wider world. Below is the suggested sequence of course unit delivery as well as the recommended number of hours to complete the respective unit. For complete details of targeted expectations within each unit and activity, please see each Unit Overview found in the CLN4U course profile. The Rights and Freedoms unit focuses on the development of the rights and freedoms of Canadians since Confederation and in particular how the current situation has been shaped by the introduction of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

Fast track courses offer an accelerated assessment turnaround time which allows students the opportunity to move through the course at a faster pace. This course explores various perspectives on issues in Canadian and world politics. Students will explore political decision making and ways in which individuals, stakeholder groups, and various institutions, including governments, multinational corporations, and non-governmental organizations, respond to and work to address domestic and international issues. Students will apply the concepts of political thinking and the political inquiry process to investigate issues, events, and developments of national and international political importance, and to develop and communicate informed opinions about them. This course and unit begins with the topic, A Study of Politics, followed by an introduction to the basic concepts of political science. Students will spend some time on the concept of ideology and search out their own political ideology. This unit begins with an examination of the forms of government and models of political processes.

CLN4U online explores a range of contemporary legal issues and how they are addressed in both Canadian and international law. Students will develop their understanding of the principles of Canadian and international law when exploring rights and freedoms within the context of topics such as religion, security, cyberspace, immigration, crimes against humanity, and environmental protection. In CLN4U online, students will apply the concepts of legal thinking and the legal inquiry process when investigating these issues in both Canadian and international contexts, and they will develop legal reasoning skills and an understanding of conflict resolution in the area of international law.
