Seyersted's presentation of Chopin's writings and biographical and bibliographical information led to the rediscovery and celebration of this turn-of-the-century author. Newsweek hailed the two-volume opus -- "In story after story and in all her novels, Kate Chopin's oracular feminism and prophetic psychology almost outweigh her estimable literary talents. The Summer of Love was a social phenomenon that occurred during the summer of , when as many as , people, mostly young people sporting hippie fashions of dress and behavior, converged in San Francisco 's neighborhood of Haight-Ashbury. Hippies, sometimes called flower children, were an eclectic group. Many were suspicious of the government , rejected consumerist values , and generally opposed the Vietnam War. A few were interested in politics; others were concerned more with art music, painting, poetry in particular or spiritual and meditative practices. Inspired by the Beat Generation of authors of the s, who had flourished in the North Beach area of San Francisco, those who gathered in Haight-Ashbury during allegedly rejected the conformist and materialist values of modern life; there was an emphasis on sharing and community. It was at this event that Timothy Leary voiced his phrase, " turn on, tune in, drop out ". These ideas included communal living, political decentralization, and dropping out.
She gained prominence during the disco era of the s and became known as the "Queen of Disco" , while her music gained a global following. While influenced by the counterculture of the s , Summer became the lead singer of a psychedelic rock band named Crow and moved to New York City. Joining a touring version of the musical Hair , she left New York and spent several years living, acting and singing in Europe, where she met music producers Giorgio Moroder and Pete Bellotte in Munich, where they recorded influential disco hits such as " Love to Love You Baby " and " I Feel Love ", marking her breakthrough into an international career. Summer earned a total of 42 hit singles on the US Billboard Hot in her lifetime, with 14 of those reaching the top-ten. She claimed a top 40 hit every year between and , and from her first top-ten hit in , to the end of , she had 12 top-ten hits 10 were top-five hits , more than any other act during that time period. She was the first artist to have three consecutive double albums reach number one on the US Billboard chart and charted four number-one singles in the US within a month period. While her fortunes on the Hot waned through those decades, Summer remained a force on the Billboard Dance Club Songs chart over her entire career.
