Though soil and water conservation SWC technologies have been adopted in Geshy subcatchment, their effects on soil quality were limitedly studied. The studied soils are characterized by low bulk density, slightly acidic with clay and clay loam texture. P at the bottom slope classes and terrace positions could be attributed to the erosion reduction and deposition effects of SWC measures.

Climate change, land degradation and land use are linked in a complex web of causality. One important impact of climate change on land degradation is that increasing global temperatures intensify the hydrological cycle, resulting in more intense rainfall, which is an important driver of soil erosion. This means that sustainable land management SLM becomes even more important with climate change. Land-use change in the form of clearing of forest for rangeland and cropland e. Many SLM practices e.

Impact of soil conservation on crop production in the Northern Ethiopian Highlands

Investments by farmers in soil and water conservation SWC practices are influenced by the physical effectiveness, financial efficiency, and social acceptability of these practices. The objective of this study is to evaluate different SWC practices in the north-western highlands of Ethiopia using various qualitative criteria and weightings based on ecological, economic and social impacts using Multi-Criteria Analysis MCA. The study reveals that MCA is a useful evaluation tool that takes into account non-monetary and less quantifiable effects of SWC practices. Farmers employ a range of criteria to evaluate the performance of SWC practices. The relative importance of each criterion in their selection of SWC alternatives depends mostly on slope categories. In steeply sloping areas, farmers assigned the highest score for criteria related to ecological impacts; whilst preferring practices with stronger positive economic impacts in moderate and gentle sloping areas.

Land degradation, in the form of soil erosion and nutrient depletion, threatens food security and the sustainability of agricultural production in many developing countries. Governments and development agencies have invested substantial resources in promoting soil conservation practices, in an effort to improve environmental conditions and reduce poverty. However, very limited rigorous empirical work has examined the economics of adopting soil conservation technology. This paper investigates the impact of stone bunds on crop production value per hectare in low and high rainfall areas of the Ethiopian highlands using cross-sectional data from more than households having multiple plots per household. We use modified random effects models, stochastic dominance analysis SDA and matching methods to ensure robustness. The parametric regression and SDA estimates are based on matched observations obtained from nearest neighbor matching using propensity score estimates. This is important because conventional regression and SDA estimates are obtained without ensuring the existence of comparable conserved and non-conserved plots within the distribution of covariates.

Metrics details. Soil erosion is the major environmental problem in Ethiopia. In response to this problem, the country has been in continuous struggle to adopt land management practices. The data was collected from randomly selected farming households using a survey questionnaire and was analyzed using multinomial logit model MNL. The results showed that education, family size, slope of the plot, tenure security, training, access to farm credit and extension service positively and significantly affect adoption of land management practices while age has a negative and significant influence on adoption.

- Es todo. Это .

Agriculture remains to be the leading sector that contributes enormously to economic development in Ethiopia.
