Your metabolism is influenced by your age, gender, muscle-to-fat ratio, the food you eat, physical activity and hormone function Most cases of Addison's disease are caused by an autoimmune response that attacks and damages the adrenal glands over time Some people have Cushing's syndrome symptoms when they take glucocorticoid hormones to treat inflammatory conditions such as asthma, lupus or rheumatoid arthritis Cortisol helps to maintain blood pressure, immune function and the body's anti-inflammatory processes Acromegaly is caused by an excess of growth hormone in adults, which causes the overgrowth of bones in the face, hands, feet and internal organs Some athletes and bodybuilders wrongly believe that taking synthetic growth hormone will help build up their muscles Generally, pituitary tumours are benign and slow growing, and pituitary cancers are extremely rare Symptoms of a goitre can include enlargement of the throat, swallowing problems and breathing problems The parathyroid glands make hormones that regulate calcium, phosphorus and magnesium in the bones and blood If the thyroid gland is overactive or sluggish, the metabolism will be affected, leading to a variety of symptoms Hyperthyroidism can be diagnosed with a simple blood test that measures thyroid hormone levels Hypothyroidism means the thyroid gland is underactive which causes the person?

Hormones help to control many body functions, such as growth, repair and reproduction.

The endocrine system involves many organ systems and hormones, many of which are still being investigated and understood. Endocrine glands make chemicals called hormones and pass them straight into the bloodstream. Hormones can be thought of as chemical messages. From the blood stream, the hormones communicate with the body by heading towards their target cell to bring about a particular change or effect to that cell.

The hormone can also create changes in the cells of surrounding tissues paracrine effect. The endocrine system works with the nervous system and the immune system to help the body cope with different events and stresses. This branch of medicine — relating to the study of the endocrine system — is called endocrinology and is practiced by endocrinologists.

The field is rapidly expanding due to understanding of the cellular pathways that hormones stimulate and the discovery of new hormones and their actions.

Exocrine glands An exocrine gland, unlike an endocrine gland, is a gland that secretes substances electrolytes, proteins or enzymes straight to a target site via ducts or tube.

Some examples include: Salivary glands Sweat glands Sebaceous glands The pancreas. The pancreas is both an endocrine and exocrine organ. It releases certain enzymes to aid in digestion delivered to the gut via the pancreatic duct. The endocrine pancreas also releases hormones such as insulin and glucagon, which are hormones predominantly related to glucose metabolism, into the blood stream. Functions of the endocrine system Some of the roles of the endocrine system include: Growth Repair Sexual reproduction Digestion Homeostasis constant internal balance.

A hormone can be thought of as a key, and its target site such as an organ has specially shaped locks on the cell walls. If the hormone fits the cell wall, then it will work.

The hormones can set off a cascade of other signaling pathways in the cell to cause an immediate effect for instance, insulin signaling leads to a rapid uptake of glucose into muscle cells or a more delayed effect glucocorticoids bind to DNA elements in a cell to switch on the production of certain proteins, which takes a while to produce. The endocrine system is a tightly regulated system that keeps the hormones and their effects at just the right level.

Endocrine System Overview

The main function of endocrine glands is to secrete hormones directly into the bloodstream. Hormones are chemical substances that affect the activity of another part of the body target site. In essence, hormones serve as messengers, controlling and coordinating activities throughout the body. See also Endocrine Glands. Upon reaching a target site, a hormone binds to a receptor, much like a key fits into a lock.

Hormones are secreted in the body by several glands that are essential for the growth, development, reproduction, etc. They are secreted by special tissues in our body through endocrine glands. Different hormones have different effects on the shape of the body. Some of these hormones work quickly to start or stop a process and some will continually work over a long period of time to perform their functions. They help in body growth, development, metabolism, sexual function, reproduction etc.

Let us find out what are hormones, why they are necessary for our body, different functions of hormones, list of important hormones etc.

Hormones of the Kidney

The endocrine system is a network of glands and organs located throughout the body. However, while the nervous system uses nerve impulses and neurotransmitters for communication, the endocrine system uses chemical messengers called hormones. Keep reading to discover more about the endocrine system, what it does, and the hormones it produces. The endocrine system is responsible for regulating a range of bodily functions through the release of hormones.

Endocrinology pp Cite as. The kidney plays an essential role in the maintenance of life in higher organisms, not only through regulating the blood pressure and body fluid homeostasis and clearing the wastes, but also by acting as a major endocrine organ.
