- Mesopotamian Poetic Language: Sumerian and Akkadian
The principal languages of ancient Mesopotamia were Sumerian, Babylonian and Assyrian together sometimes known as 'Akkadian' , Amorite, and - later - Aramaic. They have come down to us in the "cuneiform" i. The subject which studies Mesopotamian languages and the sources written in them is called Assyriology. Being incredibly durable, clay tablets have been recovered in thousands at archaeological sites from the Mediterranean to Bahrain to Iran. More are found by the year. As well as records of daily life and administration, they include religious, mathematical, musical and astronomical texts, the earliest known laws, and a rich literature that includes the Epic of Gilgamesh and the oldest versions of the Flood Story also known from the Bible. As the world's first fully urban society, ancient Mesopotamia is of paramount interest to world archaeology, and its art, architecture and technology were the rival, and indeed often the precursors, of Egypt's.
This article focuses on Poems in Posthuman Akkadian , an online intermedial project by Ivan Stanev, a contemporary poet, filmmaker and stage director who works in several languages. Poems in Posthuman Akkadian radically redefine both the act of writing and the reading process as they create complex palimpsests between word and image, inspired by the oscillation between the pictorial and the abstract in the cuneiform script, one of the earliest writing systems. These film-poems telescope the history of writing and human civilization itself through a palimpsestic interpenetration and cross-fertilization of different strata. Inspired by the hesitation between the pictorial and the abstract in the cuneiform script, which began as a system of pictograms, and in the course of a few millennia evolved into a system of completely abstract signs, the project attempts to create a hybrid intermedial grammar which endlessly oscillates between word and image by bridging the gap between the language of poetry and the language of film. On one level, it explores the legacy of the Modernist turn to mythology, ancient cultures and the vestiges of tradition to reinvent the present in the works of T. Eliot, Ezra Pound, H. Poems in Posthuman Akkadian creates a complex temporality which oscillates between the origins of human civilization and a posthuman modernity: the turn to the archaic paradoxically becomes a means to put in dialogue the spectral traces of human memory which haunt our contemporary age with the horizon of a future after the demise of human civilization.

Mesopotamian Poetic Language: Sumerian and Akkadian
Sumerian literature constitutes the earliest known corpus of recorded literature, including the religious writings and other traditional stories maintained by the Sumerian civilization and largely preserved by the later Akkadian and Babylonian empires. These records were written in the Sumerian language during the Middle Bronze Age. The Sumerians invented one of the first writing systems, developing Sumerian cuneiform writing out of earlier proto-writing systems by about the 30th century BC. The Sumerian language remained in official and literary use in the Akkadian and Babylonian empires, even after the spoken language disappeared from the population; literacy was widespread, and the Sumerian texts that students copied heavily influenced later Babylonian literature. Most Sumerian literature is written in left-justified lines, and could contain line-based organization such as the couplet or the stanza , but the Sumerian definition of poetry is unknown.
