I heartily encourage it as a starting point for all who want to understand and work effectively with Muslims in therapy. Among the most salient features are the diverse treatment modalities featured, the weaving of conceptual and practical content, and the range of audiences that can benefit from the book! Just by reading the titles of the chapters and the names of the authors, any psychologist practicing in the Muslim world would find it necessary to have it as a reference for helping him or her with the unique problems of Muslim clients.

The need to share their insights is paramount in taking this field further to the Muslim community and to the mainstream globally. After reading this book, you will have learned from some of the best researchers in the field. All the chapters give us the opportunity to explore and better understand psychology through the Islamic lens. I applaud this initiative, and highly recommend this book to be a source of reference for all in the field of psychology.

It is an essential read for all Muslim counsellors, psychotherapists, psycholo- gists and psychiatrists from all modalities, and contains valuable insights for any clinician working with Muslim clients. Indeed their invaluable help in caring for her does not go unnoticed or unappreciated. My gratitude is immense. And to my family members who do not live in my immediate house- hold but who contribute enormously to my life.

All of these people have impacted the person I am today and all of them have a very special place in my heart. I want to publicly acknowledge them all. Although there are many rea- sons for this, two major ones stand out and served as guideposts as we put together this book.

First is the idea that Western psychotherapy is antithetical to Islam. The chapters in this book are evidence of how this is being done and what some of this work looks like. Failure to properly understand the complex and nuanced relationship between religion, spirituality, and mental health causes confusion and perpetuates stigma.

Given this con- text of stigma combined with the growing amount of exceptional work being done in the field of Islamically integrated psychotherapy, we felt it an opportune time to bring this work to the public. We had three primary audiences in mind when putting together this edited volume. First and foremost is the everyday Muslim.

Indeed, our intention was to shine a light on the therapeutic encounter in which Western psychotherapy and Islam engage with each other. We hope that increased knowledge in this regard will decrease stigma. We also hope that sharing some of the ways colleagues are practicing Islamically integrated psychotherapy will prove useful to them in their own practice. It is important to me that readers know that I have done my best to do this project as comprehensively as I possibly could.

My aim was to provide a global perspective of the topic, primarily positioned within the modern context of psychology and psychotherapy, and to bring unity to this growing field. However, like all books on any given topic, there are a variety of ways it can be done as well as limitations to its scope.

In terms of limitations, please consider the following. Covering all regions of the globe equally, especially where English is not the language of research or publication, is a huge undertaking. These are important yet also vast areas of scholarship that I have pointed to in the Introduction, and so have the authors in their individual chapters, but I did not want to replicate what has been done so well already in the literature or digress from the main theme.

Despite these limitations, I hope the way this edited volume has been put together does satisfactory justice to the subject matter at hand. My first encounter with psychotherapy was as a client. My therapist, an American woman, definitely practiced spiritually integrated psychotherapy although she called it transpersonal counseling , and it had such a profound impact on me that it literally changed the trajectory of my life. Personally, the insight I gained transformed me.

I was able to make sense of my life in light of my childhood experiences and connect those dots to what was happening to me as an adult; it was like a light switched on. Professionally, I decided to enroll in a doctorate program and actually become a psychologist because I wanted to bring all that I had learned to the world, although at that time I did not envision it would be specifically within the context of Islam.

I realize that not everyone will have such a positive and transforma- tional experience with psychotherapy, but I still believe that it has the potential of being immensely helpful to anyone who honestly gives it a chance and truly wants to change, even though it is often painful. However, if one truly has a sincere intention to deal with and heal from whatever is causing distress or dysfunction, I firmly believe that God will open doors to facil- itate that process.
