Experimental investigation of hydraulic effects of two-stage fuel injection on fuel-injection systems and diesel combustion in a high-speed optical common-rail diesel engine.

In this paper, we study the diagnostics and identification of injection duration of common rail CR diesel pilot injectors of dual-fuel engines. In these pilot injectors, the injected volume is small and the repeatability of the injections and identification of the drifts of the injectors are important factors, which need to be taken into account in achieving good repeatability shot-to-shot with every cylinder and therefore a well-balanced engine and reduced overall wear. A diagnostics method based on analysis of CR pressure signal with experimental verification results is presented.

In most other parts of the world, however, diesel engines have made considerable strides due in part to the common rail fuel injection system. Significant fuel economy, reduced exhaust emissions, invincible low-speed torque, and all-around good drivability are a few of the benefits associated with common rail technology, which are covered in-depth in Diesel Common Rail and Advanced Fuel Injection Systems.

Common rail

High-pressure injection delivers power and fuel consumption benefits over earlier lower pressure fuel injection, [ citation needed ] by injecting fuel as a larger number of smaller droplets, giving a much higher ratio of surface area to volume. This provides improved vaporization from the surface of the fuel droplets, and so more efficient combining of atmospheric oxygen with vaporized fuel delivering more complete combustion. Common rail injection is widely used in diesel engines. It is also the basis of gasoline direct injection systems used on petrol engines. Vickers pioneered the use of common rail injection in submarine engines. Vickers engines with the common rail fuel system were first used in in the G-class submarines. Fuel delivery to individual cylinders could be shut off by valves in the injector lines.

DENSO Develops a New Diesel Common Rail System With the World's Highest Injection Pressure

This invention relates generally to a method for determining the fuel injection timing for an internal combustion engine and, more particularly, to a method for determining the fuel injection timing for an internal combustion engine during starting. A diesel engine achieves combustion by injecting fuel that vaporizes into the hot air of an engine cylinder. However, during cold starting conditions, the air loses much of its heat to the cylinder walls making engine starting difficult. For example, if fuel is injected into the cylinder too soon, the cold fuel cools the air charge preventing combustion temperatures from occurring. If fuel is injected too late, much of the fuel will not used in the combustion.

Farooqi, B. Snyder, S. This paper presents the development, experimentation, and validation of a reliable and robust system to monitor the injector pulse generated by an engine control module ECM which can easily be calibrated for different engine platforms and then feedback the corresponding fueling quantity to the real-time computer in a closed-loop controller in the loop CIL bench in order to achieve optimal fueling. This research utilizes field programmable gate arrays FPGA and direct memory access DMA transfer capability to achieve high speed data acquisition and delivery.

The performance of diesel engines is heavily influenced by their injection system design. In fact, the most notable advances achieved in diesel engines resulted directly from superior fuel injection system designs. While the main purpose of the system is to deliver fuel to the cylinders of a diesel engine, it is how that fuel is delivered that makes the difference in engine performance, emissions, and noise characteristics.

The compression-ignition CI diesel engine has long been used in the over-the-road, heavy-duty-vehicle sector of trucks and buses in the United States and is recognized as the most fuel-efficient internal combustion engine. However, the diesel engine has not penetrated the U. In contrast, diesel engines have significantly penetrated the Class 2b pickup and van market, with approximately 50 percent market share in , and the light-duty passenger car and light truck vehicle market in Europe, with approximately 56 percent market share in The next section discusses the available technologies for reducing fuel consumption, carbon dioxide, and criteria emissions in advanced diesel engines. This is followed by a discussion of estimated incremental costs of diesel engines relative to baseline gasoline engines.

The electronically controlled fuel injection system of the diesel engine has multi-disciplinary characteristics and strong coupling. The programming method based on a mathematical model cannot be applied to the fuel system with a diversified structure arrangement. With the rapid development of hydrodynamics, more and more simulation software is applied in the actual research. Hydsim simulation platform is one of the best software for the simulation of the electronic control injection system. In this paper, the Hydsim simulation platform is used to simulate the electronic control injection system, and a test-bed for verification is built. Based on the experimental results, the injection characteristics of high-pressure common rail are studied. The validity and accuracy of the simulation model are verified by comparing the simulation value with the test value and the standard value.

Based on DENSO's research, the new system can help increase fuel efficiency by up to 3 percent while also reducing particulate matter PM by up to 50 percent and nitrogen oxides NOx by up to 8 percent. The new DCR system will launch-to-market later this year on passenger, commercial, agricultural and construction vehicles worldwide. The company will continue to develop products and technologies that help improve the performance of diesel-powered vehicles to reduce its impact on the environment. DENSO Corporation, headquartered in Kariya, Aichi prefecture, Japan, is a leading global automotive supplier of advanced technology, systems and components in the areas of thermal, powertrain control, electronics and information and safety.

Fuel injection is the introduction of fuel in an internal combustion engine , most commonly automotive engines , by the means of an injector. This article focuses on fuel injection in reciprocating piston and rotary piston engines. All Diesel compression-ignition engines use fuel injection, and many Otto spark-ignition engines use fuel injection of one kind or another. Mass-produced Diesel engines for passenger cars such as the Mercedes-Benz OM became available in the late s and early s, [1] being the first fuel injected engines for passenger car use.
