Cities and Natural Process is a book for all concerned with the future of our cities, their design and sustainability, and our quality of life within them. Michael Hough describes how economic and technological values have squeezed any real sense of nature out of the modern city, the ways in which this has led to a divisive separation of countryside and city, wasted much of the city's resources, and shaped an urban aesthetic which is sharply at odds with both natural and social processes. Against this is set an alternative history of ecological values informing proven approaches to urban design which work with nature in the city. Cities are high emitters of greenhouse gases and are drivers of environmental modification, often leading to degradation and fragmentation of ecosystems at local and regional scales. Linked to these trends is a growing threat experienced by urban areas: the risk from hydro-meteorological and climatological hazards, further accentuated by climate change. Ecosystems and their services, though often overlooked or degraded, can provide multiple hazard regulating functions such as coastal and surface flood regulation, temperature regulation and erosion control. Engineering or grey approaches often do not tackle the root causes of risk and can increase the vulnerability of populations over the long-term. However, evidence of alternative approaches such as the role of healthy, functioning ecosystems in disaster risk reduction are still scarce, contentious, and with limited applicability in the urban context. This chapter explores the role of grey, green, and blue infrastructure and in particular hybrid approaches for disaster risk reduction and climate change adaptation to shed light on available sustainable adaptation opportunities in cities and urban areas. We highlight the dependence of cities on ecosystems as a key component of climate resilience building through case studies and literature review.

It is, therefore, a search for a sustainable urban future. The author discusses the processes of nature at work and how they are altered in urban environments, and suggests a design framework for achieving an alternative, environmentally informed, view of cities. By examining natural and human processes as they operate in balance with nature, the book reveals how alternative values can tip the balance in favour of a constructive relationship between the two. Cities and Natural Process is an essential addition to the study of urban design and environmental planning and of the potential of cities to be environmentally, economically and socially sustainable.

By Jennifer S. Baltimore: Johns Hopkins University Press, Jennifer Light's book is a fascinating and suggestive account of the influence of ecology and natural-resource management on academic urbanists, city planners, and real-estate professionals. The Nature of Cities ultimately offers new insights into the roots of the urban-renewal campaign of the s and s—a program often known simply as "the federal bulldozer.
