The Third Man: comparative analysis of a science autobiography and a cinema classic as windows into post-war life sciences research. In the preface, he diffidently points out that the title which presents him as the 'third' man credited with the co-discovery of the structure of DNA, besides Watson and Crick was chosen by his publisher, as a reference to the famous movie no doubt, featuring Orson Welles in his classical role as penicillin racketeer Harry Lime. In this paper I intend to show that there is much more to this title than merely its familiar ring. If subjected to a psycho-analytically inspired comparative analysis, multiple correspondences between movie and memoirs can be brought to the fore. Taken together, these documents shed an intriguing light on the vicissitudes of budding life sciences research during the post-war era. I will focus my comparative analysis on issues still relevant today, such as dual use, the handling of sensitive scientific information in a moral setting defined by the tension between collaboration and competition and, finally, on the interwovenness of science and warfare i. Thus, I will explain how science autobiographies on the one hand and genres of the imagination such as novels and movies on the other may deepen our comprehension of tensions and dilemmas of life sciences research then and now.

Metrics details. The year demarcated a borderline in the urban design discipline. Three books published that indicated a change of direction: City architecture by Aldo Rossi, The territory of architecture by Vittorio Gregotti and Complexity and contradiction in architecture by Robert Venturi. Finally, Robert Venturi opened up the architectural project, revealing its relations with media culture and with the contradictions of the consumer society. Critical essays investigated the phase following the second half of the Sixties, at the time when Aldo Rossi began, in , to travel across America, invited by the Institute for Architecture and Urban Studies to show his works at a series of exhibitions. His book A Scientific Autobiography , written and developed in America, belonged to this phase, which characterised at an international level by the birth of Paper Architecture the movement that had placed design at the centre of reflection as the expression of new spatial poetics. A great deal has written about Aldo Rossi: books, essays, treatises on his thought and yet, fundamentally, his strength is that he cannot include in any category.

This document is a sort of scientific autobiography. It not only lists the papers I have written, but also describes them and explains how I came to write some of them. I have included almost all my technical papers and electronic versions of many of them for downloading. Omitted are some papers for which I no longer have copies and papers that are incomplete. I have also omitted early versions of some of these papers--even in cases where the title changed. Included are some initial drafts of papers that I abandoned before fixing errors or other problems in them.

Translations into English of five of Planck's nontechnical essays constitute this book. The first essay, from which the volume takes it name, recounts the author's part in the development of relativity theory, quantum mechanics and nuclear physics. This information is admirably supplemented by the introduction, a memorial address delivered by Max von Laue after the death of Planck in

This article focuses on a dozen examples of autobiographical writing by scientists and attempts to characterise the genre. I argue that a careful reading of autobiographical texts reveals a great deal about the ways and the contexts in which scientific knowledge is created, popularised, and recycled. The material included and omitted in each of these examples of life writing reflects the social influences and processes at work in the production and application of scientific knowledge. A permanent tension between self-promotion, personal interpretation and the furtherance of the project of the scientific community as a whole is also evident. For him, their works lack inquiry, direct observation and contradiction:. Latour 17 1. Scientists are rarely dupes: many have a better working knowledge of current theories in the sociology of science than do sociologists or indeed linguists of the basics of science.
