Neural Acupuncture Unit: A New Concept for Interpreting Effects and Mechanisms of Acupuncture
When an acupuncture needle is inserted into a designated point on the body and mechanical or electrical stimulation is delivered, various neural and neuroactive components are activated. The collection of the activated neural and neuroactive components distributed in the skin, muscle, and connective tissues surrounding the inserted needle is defined as a neural acupuncture unit NAU. The traditionally defined acupoints represent an anatomical landmark system that indicates local sites where NAUs may contain relatively dense and concentrated neural and neuroactive components, upon which acupuncture stimulation would elicit a more efficient therapeutic response. The NAU-based local mechanisms of biochemical and biophysical reactions play an important role in acupuncture-induced analgesia. Different properties of NAUs are associated with different components of needling sensation. There exist several central pathways to convey NAU-induced acupuncture signals, Electroacupuncture EA frequency-specific neurochemical effects are related to different peripheral and central pathways transmitting afferent signals from different frequency of NAU stimulation.
Acupuncture [b] is a form of alternative medicine and a key component of traditional Chinese medicine TCM in which thin needles are inserted into the body. Acupuncture is generally used only in combination with other forms of treatment. The conclusions of trials and systematic reviews of acupuncture are inconsistent, which suggests that it is not effective. Acupuncture is generally safe when done by appropriately trained practitioners using clean needle technique and single-use needles. Scientific investigation has not found any histological or physiological evidence for traditional Chinese concepts such as qi , meridians , and acupuncture points, [c] and many modern practitioners no longer support the existence of life force energy qi or meridians, which was a major part of early belief systems.

White, E. Acupuncture is generally held to have originated in China, being first mentioned in documents dating from a few hundred years leading up to the Common Era. Sharpened stones and bones that date from about bce have been interpreted as instruments for acupuncture treatment [ 1 , 2 ], but they may simply have been used as surgical instruments for drawing blood or lancing abscesses [ 3 ]. Documents discovered in the Ma-Wang-Dui tomb in China, which was sealed in bce , contain no reference to acupuncture as such [ 3 ], but do refer to a system of meridians, albeit very different from the model that was accepted later [ 4 ]. These tattoos might indicate that a form of stimulatory treatment similar to acupuncture developed quite independently of China. The information is presented in the form of questions by the Emperor and learned replies from his minister, Chhi-Po [ 6 ].

Basically, meridians are a circulatory system of energy, much like the circulatory system of blood. It is at once simple and very complex. For example, to describe the direction of the flow of energy, the Meridian System incorporates the Yin and Yang duality. The Yin energy radiates outward, while the Yang energy returns to the core. Another concept involving the flow is the Chinese term for meridians, jing luo.

Hundreds of randomized controlled trials on acupuncture have been published [ 2 ]. A systematic review of the high quality randomized controlled trials for acupuncture antiemesis showed consistent positive results across different investigators, different groups of patients, and different forms of acupuncture point stimulation such as electroacupuncture, laser, acupressure, and manual acupuncture [ 10 ]. The success of acupuncture has sparked many studies on the nature of the meridian system - the foundation of traditional acupuncture theory. Since the s, it has been discovered and confirmed by researchers in several countries with refined techniques [ 12 ] that most acupuncture points correspond to the high electric conductance points on the body surface [ 13 , 14 , 15 , 16 , 17 ] and vice versa [ 18 ].
