Tourism and the Environment pp Cite as. Seven years ago, in , the first edition of the present volume appeared with the title Tourism and the Environment: Regional, Economic and Policy Issues. For the most part, it contained modified versions of papers presented at the 30th European Congress of the Regional Science Association, which had taken place in Istanbul, Turkey, in August This was one of the first occasions where conference sessions were devoted to the tourism-environment relationship.

Also non-conference papers were included as they tackled important regional, economic and policy dimensions of the tourism-environment relationship. As the first edition was quite well received by the community of academics and practitioners and as all copies were already sold in , the publishers requested a second edition.

By that time, however, things had changed. Tourism and the environment gained importance in academic and policy circles, specialised journals and numerous books were being published, conferences were organised on this theme exclusively, and more dimensions of the relationship were being investigated, while the sustainable tourism development concept had attained top priority.

Hence, there was a need to broaden the scope of the second edition to cover some of the new developments related to the topic of the book. Also, the book now contains 22 instead of the original 14 contributions. Moreover, most of the old chapters have been revised to include new data and information which have been added to the body of existing knowledge in the course of the 7 years since the first edition appeared or, even earlier.

In fact, this is a new book with an old title. Linda Bokhout organised and completed the format of the book, and she fitted the chapters of the authors to this framework. Unable to display preview. THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN TOURISM AND ENVIRONMENT

Sustainable tourism is the form of tourism that meets the needs of tourists, the tourism industry, and host communities today without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. The World Tourism Organization defines sustainable tourism in the following manner:. It is envisaged as leading to management of all resources in such a way that economic, social and aesthetic needs can be fulfilled while maintaining cultural integrity, essential ecological processes, biological diversity, and life support systems. While tourism is welcomed almost universally for the benefits and opportunities it creates, there is a growing recognition of the need to see tourism in its environmental context, to acknowledge that tourism and the environment are interdependent, and to work to reinforce the positive relationship between tourism , the environment and poverty reduction. Sustainable tourism means tourism which is economically viable but does not destroy the resources on which the future of tourism will depend, notably the physical environment and the social fabric of the host community.

Tourism is a multidimensional economic activity that has an interaction with the environment. Tourism, Environment and Sustainability

As the global tourism industry grows at an ever-faster pace, traditional vacation destinations become less important and oversaturated; more and more people are looking for exotic, unique and unspoiled destinations, offering pristine nature and a culturally rich experience. At the same time, however, this mass tourism is threatening exactly that through severe, negative impacts it has on the host community. The following research will concentrate on sustainable tourism development and environmental preservation. Also, a conclusion and recommendation will be provided, which draw on the findings, as well as a bibliography.

Need for Sustainable Tourism Development

The outlook for the tourism sector remains highly uncertain. Domestic tourism is helping to soften the blow, at least partially, and governments have taken impressive immediate action to restore and re-activate the sector, while protecting jobs and businesses. Many countries are also now developing measures to build a more resilient tourism economy post COVID These include preparing plans to support the sustainable recovery of tourism, promoting the digital transition and move to a greener tourism system, and rethinking tourism for the future. Tourism continues to be one of the sectors hardest hit by the coronavirus pandemic and the outlook remains highly uncertain. Destinations that rely heavily on international, business and events tourism are particularly struggling, with many coastal, regional and rural areas faring better than cities.
