A comparative study considering two rice varieties differing in panicle compactness, lax-panicle Upahar and compact-panicle OR, revealed significant difference in grain filling, cytokinin oxidase CKX activity and expression, and expression of cell cycle regulators and cytokinin signaling components between the basal and apical spikelets of OR, but not of Upahar. Exogenous application of cytokinin 6-Benzylaminopurine, BAP to OR improved grain filling significantly, and this was accompanied by a significant decrease in expression and activity of CKX , particularly in the basal spikelets where the activity of CKX was significantly higher than that in the apical spikelets. The results suggested that seed-specific overexpression of OsRR4 and OsRR6 , and more importantly of IPT9 could be an effective biotechnological intervention towards improving the CK level of the developing caryopses leading to enhanced grain filling in rice cultivars bearing large panicles with numerous spikelets, and thereby increasing their yield potential. Rice is a staple crop for the people of Asian and African regions, which are most populated as well compared with other regions of the world [ 1 ].

Plants synthesize a chemically diverse range of hormones that regulate growth, development, and responses to environmental stresses. The major classes of plant hormones are specialized metabolites with exquisitely tailored perception and signaling systems, but equally important are the enzymes that control the dose and exposure to the bioactive forms of these molecules. Here, we review new insights into the role of enzyme families, including the SABATH methyltransferases, the methylesterases, the GH3 acyl acid-amido synthetases, and the hormone peptidyl hydrolases, in controlling the biosynthesis and modifications of plant hormones and how these enzymes contribute to the network of chemical signals responsible for plant growth, development, and environmental adaptation. Plants produce an array of signaling molecules with essential roles in plant growth and development and control responses to environmental stresses, such as drought, herbivory, and pathogen attack. Many plant growth regulators, or phytohormones, were originally isolated as specialized metabolites with molecular structures that reflect their metabolic origins Fig.
