Afterimage 1 March ; 47 1 : 93— In most surveys of transnational digital media cultures, there is a tendency to treat the diffusion of technology and capital as a flattening , where the Anglophone West as the epicenter relays technological novelties and a premade trajectory of progress to the periphery, or conceives of the Global South as pure contrast, whose histories are impossibly different, alien, or distant.
East and Southeast Asia has the largest Internet population in the world in absolute numbers. It is also at the forefront of digital developments in many fields, including entertainment, e-commerce, and artificial intelligence and big data. The region encompasses a diverse digital landscape that reflects divergent histories, cultures, and socioeconomic and political realities. In this course we study how individuals, civil society organization, and political leaders and organizations make use of different platforms such as social media. We also explore threats to privacy and issues of surveillance.

Digital media is changing the ways in which religion is practiced, understood, proselytised and countered. Religious institutions and leaders use digital media to engage with their congregations who now are not confined to single locations and physical structures. The faithful are part of online communities which allow them a space to worship and to find fellowship. Migrant and mobile subjects thus are able to be connected to their faith - whether home grown or emerging - wherever they may be; thus providing them with an anchor in unfamiliar physical and cultural surroundings. As Asia rises, mobilities associated with Asian populations have escalated.

Cultural globalization refers to the transmission of ideas, meanings, and values around the world in such a way as to extend and intensify social relations. This has added to processes of commodity exchange and colonization which have a longer history of carrying cultural meaning around the globe. The circulation of cultures enables individuals to partake in extended social relations that cross national and regional borders. The creation and expansion of such social relations is not merely observed on a material level. Cultural globalization involves the formation of shared norms and knowledge with which people associate their individual and collective cultural identities. Cultural globalization integrates scholars from several disciplines, such as anthropology, sociology, communication, cultural studies, geography, political science and international relations.
