A Quick-Start Tutorial on Relational Database Design

This book delivers a thorough discussion of the foundations of the relational model of database design along with a systematic treatment of the formal theory for the model. This book introduces you to the theory of relational databases, and SQL, focusing on the application of that theory to the design of computer languages that properly embrace it. The book is intended for those studying relational databases as a part of a degree course in Information Technology IT. Book Site. Click here to find out. Book Description This book delivers a thorough discussion of the foundations of the relational model of database design along with a systematic treatment of the formal theory for the model. About the Authors Hugh Darwen is a computer scientist who was an employee of IBM United Kingdom from to , and has been involved in the history of the relational model.

The relational model RM for database management is an approach to managing data using a structure and language consistent with first-order predicate logic , first described in by English computer scientist Edgar F. Codd , [1] [2] where all data is represented in terms of tuples , grouped into relations. A database organized in terms of the relational model is a relational database. The purpose of the relational model is to provide a declarative method for specifying data and queries: users directly state what information the database contains and what information they want from it, and let the database management system software take care of describing data structures for storing the data and retrieval procedures for answering queries. Most relational databases use the SQL data definition and query language; these systems implement what can be regarded as an engineering approximation to the relational model. A table in an SQL database schema corresponds to a predicate variable; the contents of a table to a relation; key constraints, other constraints, and SQL queries correspond to predicates. However, SQL databases deviate from the relational model in many details , and Codd fiercely argued against deviations that compromise the original principles.

The database is a collection of inter-related data which is used to retrieve, insert and delete the data efficiently. It is also used to organize the data in the form of a table, schema, views, and reports, etc. For example: The college Database organizes the data about the admin, staff, students and faculty etc. But if there is any mistake, please post the problem in the contact form. Database Design is a collection of processes that facilitate the designing, development, implementation and maintenance of enterprise data management systems. Properly designed database are easy to maintain, improves data consistency and are cost effective in terms of disk storage space. The database designer decides how the data elements correlate and what data must be stored. The main objectives of database designing are to produce logical and physical designs models of the proposed database system. The logical model concentrates on the data requirements and the data to be stored independent of physical considerations.

It has since become the dominant database model for commercial applications in comparison with other database models such as hierarchical, network and object models.
