Rogers maintains that therapists must have three attributes to create a growth-promoting climate in which individuals can move forward and become capable of becoming their true self: 1 congruence genuineness or realness , 2 unconditional positive regard acceptance and caring , and 3 accurate empathic understanding an ability to deeply grasp the subjective world of another person. In being authentic, the therapist shows they are trustworthy, which helps in building a good therapeutic relationship with the client.

By Saul McLeod , updated Humanistic therapies evolved in the USA during the s. Carl Rogers proposed that therapy could be simpler, warmer and more optimistic than that carried out by behavioral or psychodynamic psychologists. His view differs sharply from the psychodynamic and behavioral approaches in that he suggested that clients would be better helped if they were encouraged to focus on their current subjective understanding rather than on some unconscious motive or someone else's interpretation of the situation.

The counseling relationship is foundational for effective mental health care. A working relationship is a pre-requisite for a multicultural conceptualization as well as many advanced counseling techniques. The counseling relationship has been considered a common factor for over 80 years, as the relationship is foundational to all counseling theories. Carl Rogers is often credited as an early advocate of the counseling relationship and an empathetic way of being. Rogers encouraged counselors to be warm, genuine, and empathetic.

Person-centered therapy

As founder of the person-centred approach, Carl Rogers — is arguably the most influential psychologist and psychotherapist of the 20th century. This book provides unique insights into his life and a clear explanation of his major theoretical ideas. This Third Edition is co-authored by Brian Thorne and Pete Sanders, leading person-centred practitioners and bestselling authors. Brian Thorne draws on his experience of having known and worked with Rogers to beautifully describe the way in which Rogers worked with clients and from that, to draw out the practical implications of what is, in effect, a functional philosophy of human growth and relationships. In the twenty years since the first edition of Carl Rogers appeared, the book has continued to provide an accessible introduction for all practitioners and students of the person-centred approach. Carl Rogers

Person-centered therapy , also known as person-centered psychotherapy , person-centered counseling , client-centered therapy and Rogerian psychotherapy , is a form of psychotherapy developed by psychologist Carl Rogers beginning in the s [1] and extending into the s. Person-centered therapy, now considered a founding work in the humanistic school of psychotherapies, began with Carl Rogers, [6] : and is recognized as one of the major psychotherapy "schools" theoretical orientations , [ clarification needed ] along with psychodynamic psychotherapy , psychoanalysis , classical Adlerian psychology , cognitive behavioral therapy , existential therapy , and others. Rogers affirmed individual personal experience as the basis and standard for living and therapeutic effect. Living in the present rather than the past or future, with organismic trust, naturalistic faith in one's own thoughts and the accuracy in one's feelings, and a responsible acknowledgment of one's freedom, with a view toward participating fully in our world, contributing to other peoples' lives, are hallmarks of Rogers' person-centered therapy.
