The design, construction and evaluation of a solar dryer for Ataulfo mango harvested in the Soconusco region in the state of Chiapas is reported. For the design, the specifications of the product to be dried, the registration of the climatic conditions of the place and the experimental drying tests carried out were used in the UNICACH. The proposed methodology is based on the systematic combination of the application of the basic concepts of design and general rules of heat and mass transfer, presenting the results of these calculations in a table.

Design, construction and performance testing of solar crop dryers for rural areas Abstract: Postharvest losses experienced by farmers in rural areas are mainly due to food degradation caused by high moisture content and poor initial moisture control. Farm drying methods often compound this problem by contaminating the produce with foreign matter. The basic assumption is rural farmers desire to reduce postharvest losses, and hence, need to adopt affordable low cost, low technology methods in controllably drying their produce. It was decided that enclosed solar crop drying was feasible due to the high solar radiation levels during harvest times.

The dryer dimensions can be changed to meet various capacity needs. The chimney and the table should be the same width. The height of the chimney, as measured from the top of the table, should be half the length of the table. Note that significantly increasing the length of the table and thus the height of the chimney may be cumbersome, as the structure might tip over.

Abstract Due to higher prices and shortages of fossil fuels and to reduce the fuel consumption used in the drying process, more importance is given to solar energy sources as it is freely available. For these purposes, an indirect type solar dryer was designed and developed to dry agricultural products. Solar dryer consists of solar flat plate air collector with V-corrugated absorption plates, insulated drying chamber, and chimney for exhaust air. The total area of the collectors is 2 m2. An experiment was conducted to study drying characteristics of banana.

Metrics details. An indirect, active-type, environmentally friendly, low-cost solar dryer was designed to dry various agricultural products. The dryer was built by locally available, biologically degradable, low-cost materials. The dryer consists of solar flat plate air heater with three layers of insulation, drying chamber and a fan with a regulator to induce required air flow in the system. Banana is the chosen crop for the experimentation since it is high in production and also has substantial loss in India.
