In criminal investigations, the DNA fingerprint of a suspect's blood or other body material is compared to that of the evidence from the crime scene to see how closely they match. The technique can also be used to establish paternity.

DNA fingerprinting: Applications

It seems that you're in Germany. We have a dedicated site for Germany. Although DNA fingerprinting is a very young branch of molecular genetics, being barely six years old, its recent impact on science, law and politics has been dramatic.

Less spectacularly, but equally importantly, DNA typing methods are steadily diffusing into an ever wider set of applications and research fields, ranging from medicine through to conservation biology. In parallel with these workshops, which have provided an important focus for researchers, Bill Amos and Josephine Pemberton in Cambridge have established an informal newsletter "Fingerprint News" which is playing a major role as a forum for DNA fingerprinters.

By , it was clear that the field had broadened sufficiently to warrant a full international meeting. The success of the meeting can be judged from the remarkable attendance, with delegates from no less than 30 countries.

DNA Fingerprinting

In AFLP analysis, bacterial genomic DNA is digested with restriction enzymes, ligated to adapters, and a subset of DNA fragments are amplified using primers containing 16 adapter defined sequences with one additional arbitrary nucleotide. Polymorphisms of different Escherichia coli strains or Agrobacterium tumefaciens strains were demonstrated as distinct, unique bands in a denaturing sequencing gel using AFLP. DNA fingerprinting techniques such as restriction fragment length polymorphism RFLP and random primer polymorphism amplification detection RAPD have been described as powerful molecular typing methods for microorganisms 1. AFLP has been used to establish genetic linkage maps and to localize disease resistant genes 3 , 4. There are three major steps in the AFLP procedure: i restriction endonuclease digestion of genomic DNA and the ligation of specific adapters; ii amplification of the restriction fragments by PCR using primer pairs containing common sequences of the adapter and one to three arbitrary nucleotides; iii analysis of the amplified fragments using gel electrophoresis.

DNA fingerprinting , also called DNA typing, DNA profiling, genetic fingerprinting, genotyping, or identity testing , in genetics , method of isolating and identifying variable elements within the base-pair sequence of DNA deoxyribonucleic acid. The technique was developed in by British geneticist Alec Jeffreys, after he noticed that certain sequences of highly variable DNA known as minisatellites , which do not contribute to the functions of genes , are repeated within genes. Jeffreys recognized that each individual has a unique pattern of minisatellites the only exceptions being multiple individuals from a single zygote , such as identical twins.

A beginner's guide to DNA fingerprinting

In many ways, DNA profiling technology is very similar to the conventional techniques used for forensic identification. As with, for example, blood grouping techniques, the molecular characteristics of the scene of crime sample may be determined and compared with those of the scene of reference samples from suspects and victim.

Genetic identity testing involves identifying the patterns of genetic material that are unique to almost every individual.
