At a trial on 17 January , the National Convention had convicted the king of high treason in a near-unanimous vote; while no one voted "not guilty", several deputies abstained.
The monarchy was abolished on September 21, ; later Louis and his queen consort, Marie-Antoinette , were guillotined on charges of counterrevolution. His sister Elizabeth would follow him to the guillotine. Louis XVI approved French military support for the American colonies in their successful struggle against the British , but the expense nearly bankrupted the country. Louis convened the Estates-General in an effort to solve his budget crisis, but by doing so he unwittingly sparked the French Revolution.
Flight to Varennes
Louis was officially arrested on August 13, and sent to the Temple, an ancient Paris fortress used as a prison. On 21 September, the National Assembly declared France to be a republic and abolished the monarchy. The Girondins were partial to keeping the deposed king under arrest, both as a hostage and a guarantee for the future. The more radical members — mainly the Commune and Parisian deputies who would soon be known as the Mountain — argued for Louis's immediate execution. The legal background of many of the deputies made it difficult for a great number of them to accept an execution without due process of some sort, and it was voted that the deposed monarch should be tried before the National Convention, the organ that housed the representatives of the sovereign people. On 11 December, among crowded and silent streets, the deposed king was brought from the Temple to stand before the Convention and hear his indictment, an accusation of High Treason and Crimes against the State. On 15 January , the Convention, composed of deputies, voted out the verdict, which was a foregone conclusion — voted guilty, and none voted for acquittal.
Louis is executed on the 21st of January Then, the following August, Marie-Antoinette is transferred, alone, without her children or sister-in-law Madame Elisabeth, to the jail of La Conciergerie. It is located within the premises of the main Courthouse of Paris, next to the Revolutionary Tribunal. For an ordinary prisoner that would mean that trial is imminent. But Marie-Antoinette is no ordinary prisoner. She may have some value as a hostage in war negotiations with the Austrians, and the National Convention sends emissaries to that effect to the enemy.
Louis XVI attempted to work within the framework of his limited powers but won little support. For the next two years, the palace remained the official residence of the king. Prodded by the queen, Louis committed the family to a disastrous escape attempt from the capital to the eastern frontier on June 21, However this would have involved splitting up the royal family and Louis and Marie-Antoinette decided on the use of a heavy, conspicuous coach drawn by six horses. Due to the cumulative effect of a host of errors, which in and of themselves would not have condemned the mission to failure, the royal family was thwarted in its escape after Jean-Baptiste Drouet, the postmaster of Sainte-Menehould, recognized the king from his portrait.
